History of the Team
The Phoenix Suns are a franchise that competes in the National Basketball Association. The team plays in the Western Conference Pacific Division and is based out of Phoenix, Arizona. The Suns are the only team in the Pacific Division that does not compete in California.
The team was established in 1968 as an NBA expansion team. The Phoenix Suns struggled in their first few seasons, but they become dominant in the 1970s. The Suns contended for their first NBA Finals in 1976, thanks to the dominant trio of Dick Van Arsdale, Alvan Adams, and Paul Westphal.
The Suns did not win the 1976 NBA Championship. They would not make it to the Finals again until 1993, but they were defeated once again. The Suns went on a long-term slide until the early 2000s when Steve Nash became the franchise centerpiece.
The Suns experienced a lot of success, with Steve Nash leading the way. However, they never captured a title, and the franchise has not won the NBA Finals to this day. The Suns have the seventh-best winning percentage in NBA history and ten former players in the Hall of Fame.
However, they are still searching for their first NBA title to accompany their division and conference championships.
2020-21 Update
Phoenix has never won an NBA Finals, but 2021 could be the year to shatter this streak. The Suns play in the Western Conference Pacific Division, one of the best sectors of the NBA. The Pacific Division features the Los Angeles Lakers, the defending NBA Champions, and the Golden State Warriors, a team that has won five conference titles and three NBA Championships since 2015.
Thanks to a recent slide by the Los Angeles Lakers, the Phoenix Suns have moved into first place in the Pacific Division. The Suns are currently 26-12 and 0.5 games ahead of the Lakers.
Phoenix is a strong franchise because of its depth. The team is led by Devin Booker, who is averaging 25.1 points per game. However, the supporting players on this team, like Chris Paul, Deandre Ayton, and Mikal Bridges, are fantastic.
Any team with Chris Paul in a supporting role will be good, which has proven true with the Suns. The Suns are scoring 114.1 points per game which is first in the league. They are giving up 107.6 points per contest which is the fourth-best in the NBA.
Additionally, Phoenix is dealing 27.2 assists every night, which ranks them at third in the league. The Suns are the definition of a true team, which has helped them find success throughout 2020-21.
